Hey all.
First of all, I am slowely finishing jHamachi. Havannah, is much much much harder!……
Onto the main topic,
Yesterday, I upgraded my Macbook Pro to Windows 7 64bit. It all went very quick. 20minutes to install an operating system is pretty impressive. I never ever installed Vista on any of my computers, so in this whatever number of years, I was only using XP (along with Linux, or OSX)….
Windows 7 is very good, but it has its downsides: (some of these only apply to those who want to access HFS+ file-system)
1) HFS/HFS+ drives are read-only. There is no option to force write to it. I had to get a program called MacDrive 8. I still had to use it on XP, but I was expecting more from 7. Oh well…
2) My External HD worked just fine under XP and Vista. Plugged into 7, and somehow it tells me that I need to format the drive! After so many google searches, I didnt find any solutions. So I started doing my bits and pieces. To fix it, I plugged it into XP again and reset the file system permission system.
Remember, my HD was already NTFS, and was a basic and not a dynamic drive. So if its not NTFS, you need to convert the drive. Google search convert command-prompt arguments. This will convert your drive, without the need to format. If you need to change from dynamic to basic, you need to format. Sorry no other ways possible.
Anyhow, once in xp, disable “Simple File Sharing” in folder-options in Control Panel. Then go to the root of the drive, right click and hit properties. Click on the “Security” tab, and click to add a username. When the little search window comes up, type “Users” and it should find the appropriate group. Then hit apply, and give it sometime.
Unplug it, plug it into 7, and bingo you have limited access to your drive!! Do the same thing, but this time under 7, and also tell it to apply the security settings to the Child and all the subfolders as well (there is a checkbox). If you haven’t messed around with the owners and auditors, then you don’t need to mess around with it this time either (I had, so I had to move around stuff a bit).
If you still have problems, leave me a comment.
3) It uses a LOT of memory. I only ran firefox, winamp and thats all really, and was already hitting 50 processors, and 1.5Gb of RAM!!! I mean WOW! Under XP, I would prob be using 600Mb and 20 processors! Wow.
But it looks much much better than XP. To me, Microsoft really did a good job with XP, fail on Vista, and an OK job for 7 (thumbs up!)
